Sales Copy - or Technical Writing - Which One Are You Using?

"They Lumbered Onto The Platform and Into The Train Like Sad Clowns on a Laughless Day"

I saw these technocrats --- e-wizards -- you know what I mean. Worker drones. In other words I saw these guys in suits who are still bowing on their knees every thankfully for the arrival of Windows 95 come onto the train. They are the.... er um.... WORD SMITHS.

It was at this point when I realized how much I didn't miss working in the Corporate American mainstream. And before I get you all worked up let me explain the reason why i don't miss those days......

Technical Writing vs Copywriting
There is no fine line when it comes to these two styles of writing. In fact, there is NO comparison because they are so radically different. That should bring a sigh of relief to some of you.....

Word smithing is an inside tired term from the world of imprisonment... I mean... the 80 hour work week in cubicleland. It is a lot of rehashed gibberish and takes forever to get to the point. While copywriting on the other hand is a fresher approach.

In boxing terms..... Technical Writing is the dancing around, (fencing if you will) while sales copywriting goes straight for the gut..... with an additional UPPERCUT.

Here are some additional recent thoughts on the topic:
You need to use sentences that carry action in them. As far as web sites go, pictures and prices aren't enough to cut it in the online world. You need some type of strong prose to carry your messages across. You need OUTGOING SALES COPY.

Your marketing is too important to leave in the hands of your secretary or some hired hack. In most cases you need to jump in and take the bull by the horns yourself even if your a novice. Having a lot of heart can go a long way.

Technical writing headine:
"SEO Strategies Prove Effective In Recent Online Tests"

Copywriting style:
“If You Ever Dreamed Of Beating Your Competition’s Web Site Rankings – Get More Customers, And Dominate Google – This IS FOR YOU !!”

Technical writing headline:
"Our New Formulas Boost Response"

Copywriting style:
“Here’s How You Generate An Extra $267,000.14 To Your Company Without Adding On New Staff!”

I'd rather get to the point than dance around my intended target. Which would you rather do?
